 Swimming Pools at Ribeira Grande, north coast of Sao Miguel, Azores Ribeira Grande has a large open air swimming pool complex, which was very busy when we went, as it was a weekend and a great restaurant on the coast, A La Bote, which you will see advertised everywhere and was very good indeed. Swimming Pools at Ribeira Grande, north coast of Sao Miguel, Azores Ribeira Grande has a large open air swimming pool complex, which was very busy when we went, as it was a weekend and a great restaurant on the coast, A La Bote, which you will see advertised everywhere and was very good indeed. Unfortunately, Ribeira Grande was probably the shabbiest place we found on Sao Miguel. The beach area was huge, but quite scruffy and needed a thorough clean up. Our overwhelming impression was that it had seen better days, but may be about to see a promising future, due to the amount of new construction going on. Indeed, if the beach was cleaned up and one or two concessions to the holiday maker were introduced (such as beach toilets and a beach café), then its easy access due to the new motorway from the south, would make this a really attractive spot to visit.
