Nossa Senhora da Estrela (Mother Church) at Ribeira Grande, north coast of Sao Miguel, Azores If you are into churches and church architecture, then this is the pace for you. The churches here were huge - the largest we saw anywhere on the island - and very grand indeed. The temporary shack-like buildings here are due to the fact that we were here just after the city's annual festival. These festivals seemed to involve a long religious procession, a profusion of flower petals, followed by fireworks and copious drinking!
