Praia Beach, south coast Sao Miguel, Azores This large sandy beach is simply called Praia (Portuguese for 'beach') and found right next to the south coast road, between Ribeira Cha and Agua de Alto. There is plenty of free parking, but even so, not enough for the weekends when it gets very busy and the police have to direct the traffic. This gorgeous beach has a life guard, a café and toilets. The waves when we visited were gentle and very inviting. A popular spot for locals, so be warned that the south road can get very crowded, especially when everyone is arriving or leaving at the weekend.
