 Marina at Vila Franca do Campo, south coast Sao Miguel, Azores From the marina here, you can go whale and dolphin watching (though you should book 2 or 3 days in advance) or catch the little fishing boat to the island of Ilheu Vila Franca do Campo (just turn up for this). This ten minute boat trip cost us 3 euros return (summer 2008) and was well worth it. It sails out to the little island, which used to be a volcano, on a perpetual round trip in summer. On the island, you can swim in the huge, sea-filled volcanic crater, which now acts as a giant swimming pool: a fantastic experience to tell the folks back home! I went on a whale watching trip too. It cost 50euros (summer 2008) and we were out for nearly 3 hours. Sadly we didn't see any whales, but we saw plenty of dolphins (Atlantic Spotted Dolphin and Common Dolphin), which was a treat.
