North of Furnas Lake. Lagoa das Furnas, east of Sao Miguel, Azores At the north, there is a huge car park, which would signal its popularity you would think. However, when we went (midweek) it was very, very quiet. Only a few other families were there to see the bubbling hot volcanic mud, hot springs and small geysers, which belie the tranquil scene - its all going on underground! Steam clouds can be seen from afar, giving this area an eerie feel. Apparently, at the weekend, families bring their picnics in a cooking pot and bury it in the hot mud cauldrons to act as a natural slow-cooker. Stone picnic tables and benches are provided in the woods and everywhere smells sulphurous. There is a walking trail all around the lake and the surrounding hills. On a hot, still day, we found this area felt too close and stuffy to be comfortable. However on a re-visit about a week later, after a day of rain, it was delightfully fresh and beautiful: pick your day! North of Furnas Lake. Lagoa das Furnas, east of Sao Miguel - The Azores.
