View from Vista do Rei to Sete Cidades. This huge volcanic crater is home to two lakes: Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde. It is easy to tell which is which, since they are named after their colour when it reflects the sky and the mountains around. It's a steep climb (drive) up from the coast to Vista do Rei (the King's view) but well worth it, when you stand at the top looking down at these beautiful lakes. It feels more like the Alps than the middle of the Atlantic. The mountains are huge and steep, covered in a hundred different shades of green and often shrouded in mist. Legend has it that the lakes were created when a princess and her lover, a shepherd boy were forced to part from each other. The lakes were created from their tears, each the colour of their eyes. Ahhhhhhhhhh.
