 Closer view of the twin lakes at Sete Cidades, west of Sao Miguel, Azores There are many opportunities to stop the car for a view to the two main lakes, but only one chance to see the smaller Lagoa do Santiago. (There are no panoramas of this little lake, I'm afraid. We missed it.) This is great walking country: ridges lead off around the mountain peaks to the west, before cutting down to the lake edge. Closer view of the twin lakes at Sete Cidades, west of Sao Miguel, Azores There are many opportunities to stop the car for a view to the two main lakes, but only one chance to see the smaller Lagoa do Santiago. (There are no panoramas of this little lake, I'm afraid. We missed it.) This is great walking country: ridges lead off around the mountain peaks to the west, before cutting down to the lake edge. A note to walkers: many of the suggested published walks are not circular, so you would need to use public transport or two cars if you organising yourself independently. Once in the small village of Sete Cidades, close to the lakes, don't expect to find a myriad of walking shops, selling all manner of goods to the passing tourist. No equivalent of Kendal Mint Cake here, or various different brands of boots and waterproofs, guide books and postcards. No huge, costly car parks. You can get a snack, a coffee and an icecream.
