View from road to Lagoa do Fogo from Santa Cruz, central area Sao Miguel, Azores Lagoa do Fogo isn't in all the guide books. And when it is, it isn't given the same space and prominence as Sete Cidades or Lagoa das Furnas, but for me it outshines them both. The road up from the south coast at Santa Cruz is steep and winding. We drove in and out of hill mist, glimpsing the heather-carpeted mountains above. All around us were lush green fields of dairy cows, blue hydrangea hedges and spectacular views back down to the south coast. Then when we reached the top, every so often the mist would clear and we could see down to this beautiful lake. Buzzards soared in and out of the mist, birdsong filled the air. We shivered in our shorts and vest tops and had to search for a fleece top to keep out the cold. Elsewhere, other intrepid tourists wrapped themselves in their beach towels to keep warm.
