And when it is, it isn't given the same space and prominence as Sete Cidades or Lagoa das Furnas, but for me it outshines them both. The road up from the south coast at Santa Cruz is steep and winding. We drove in and out of hill mist, glimpsing the heather-carpeted mountains above. All around us were lush green fields of dairy cows, blue hydrangea hedges and spectacular views back down to the south coast. Then when we reached the top, every so often the mist would clear and we could see down to this beautiful lake. Totally gorgeous.
