Azores guide and tour: Pools at Lomba da Fazenda, Nordeste, north-east Sao Miguel

Pools at Lomba da Fazenda, Nordeste, north-east Sao Miguel, Azores On approaching Nordeste from the north coast, you can take a left turn at the roundabout to a Zone Balnear (swimming area). This little road winds down and down and down until you reach the bottom of a valley, where there is a campsite and a man-made pool right next to the sea. You just park up and swim. There are toilets, showers, changing cubicles and life guards but no shade, no cafes, no charge and just one little shop selling goods in support of the indigenous Priolo (a type of Bullfinch found only here) but that's it. It's all free and do-it-yourself. The locals told us that sometimes they see dolphins close by whilst they are swimming. You can swim in the sea here too, if it's not too rough. It's fantastic to bob around in the water, surrounded by beautiful steep cliffs and mountains on 3 sides and the ocean on the other.
