Azores guide and tour: Nordeste, north east Sao Miguel, Azores

Nordeste, north east Sao Miguel, Azores Nordeste is a lovely little village. Just behind this church is a great snack bar, where you can choose from 4 different types of local bread and 5 different types of filling with salad, or from a huge range of savoury and sweet pastries, oh... I could go on. I stayed near here for a week and tried most things. The sisters who serve behind the counter speak immaculate English and look so alike that it took me 3 days to realise that they were not the same person. There are other snack bars here too and a couple of restaurants (the Tronquiera is recommended) as well as a huge car park with a little kiosk, which seemed to be perpetually frequented by drunken men, one of whom sang opera. The only trouble with this place is that it is such a long way from anywhere. It takes over an hour and a half to get to Ponta Delgada, by the north road or Furnas, by the south road. If you are staying here you have to either not mind the travelling or just enjoy the immediate surroundings. One event made me realise just how different life here is: I tried to buy tomatoes, or peppers or mushrooms, or any fresh veg from 3 different mini Mercado shops, on a Saturday in mid summer, all to no avail. When I gave up and asked the last shop keeper, he explained that the delivery of fresh fruit and vegetables was on Wednesdays, so I would have to wait until then. It's surprising what you can learn to do with a tin of sweetcorn! Nordeste, north east Sao Miguel, Azores - The Azores. Review by Corinne. Summer 2008.
